Conductor Martin Sentenced by Lethbridge Court

A. 47. Martin, CPR conductor from Macleod, was sentenced to eighteen months in Lethbridge jail for theft of fare from Macleod to Macgillvray on February 5 and two fares to Michel. The case drew wide attention with witnesses from Montreal and local legal counsel T. M. Tweedie, K.C., among others.

Court hearing over conductor fare case prepares June appeal

McNeill of Mackeil led prosecution with W M Campbell and Calgary solicitor George Walker for the PLR. Witness Miss Barry from the CI R audit office testified on conductor trip reports and notes that conductors often correct shortages later. Pinkerton agent J A Bedard described trips and unissued receipts while Weir and Parsons faced tough cross examination. Defense argued shortages were routine and chargeable to Conductor Martin. Case set for June 4. Also small ads note cheap warehouse, a traction engine, a six room rental, and Leghorn egg sale offerings.
