The Wierald regrets to announce that VOT Macy, recently arrived from England to assume the rettorship of Fort Steele, has decided to return home after visiting the scene. He found a small congregation of fifteen adults and three children and said conditions were not as presented. Mr Macy, Mrs Macy, and their daughters departed yesterday for England.
The May 23 British Columbia Gazette lists Alfred Clement Nelson to serve as government agent and registrar for multiple offices in Hast Kootenay South, including lands registrar and gold commissioner for Fort Steele, deputy clerk of the peace, and Cranbrook election and water districts. Noel Stirling Arnold Wal linger is named deputy assessor and collector for the southern Mast Kootenay electoral district.
The Fort Steele assessment district finalizes the 1912 tax totals across real property wildlands coal lands timberlands and personal property with figures for assessed values and taxes due. Essays ranged from 140 to 600 words, with many showing careful preparation and revision.
Cranbrook moves forward with preparations for the annual Pall Pair under new managing director Fr. A. Russell at 50 per month for three months and 200 for September. Ladies' committee reports 509 tags sold and gains two honorary directors Mrs. W. F. Doran and Mrs. J. F. Smith.
The bye elections held Monday produced four Liberal victories for Sifton candidates by large majorities. Malcom MacKenzie won Claresholm in a close contest against Dr. McMillan. Cardston-Woolf led by 100, Edmonton-Cross by over 600, Sedgwick-Stewart by over AM, Sturgeon-Boyle by 400, Claresholm-MM MacKenzie by a small majority.
Closing session of the Methodist conference in Victoria appoints district leaders. J F Dimmick is selected for East Kootenay with others listed as To be supplied or assigned, including Fernie and Kimberley. Vancouver city chosen as site for next year’s convention.
Montreal May 28 The official announcement names S J Chamberlin as president of the Grand Trunk railway at the Grand Trunk Pacific in succession to the late Charles M Hays. Chamberlin takes Hays seat on the board. Wainwright becomes first vice president of the GT and GT P. Reynolds of Montreal is made director and second vice president of the GT P.
London May 28 doctors in the Salvation Army announce General Hogtt is recovering from cataract surgery. The bulletin states the general is doing exceptionally well and under careful observation as he regains sight and strength.
Charlie Robinson issues a challenge to L A Streeter to a fight on any terms. He offers winner take all or 75 percent of gate receipts and possible side bet. If terms are rejected Streeter may propose fair terms.
Otto Meier and Con J Whelar completed a grueling 100 hour journey by horse and buggy from Fernie B C to Spokane Washington. Their route included Cranbrook Kingsgate Rathdrum and Bonners Ferry with many washed out roads and embankments to maneuver. The team Pet and Babe finished in front of the Spokesman-Review building with 25 hours to spare.
Mr Meier breaks a long distance record, winning 300 dollars from Mr Pollock after assessing road and weather conditions. Pollock must cover expenses as Mr Whelan acted as judge of the run.
Cranbrook Poultry Association announces its regular monthly meeting will be postponed from January 1st to Friday the 10th at Sopam. Rev. O I Kendall will lecture on Preparing fowls for exhibition. Kendall, a renowned fancier, brings experience from the New England States and will entertain and inform. A number of important business matters will be taken up. all interested in brighter poultry and more for it are welcome.
Reeve John Oliver of Delta quits after revealing a conflict of interest. The public works contract for road and bridge work was awarded to his son, prompting Oliver to step down, earning praise for integrity in provincial political circles.
Ottawa May 28 The regulation drafted by the commission of conservation and promulgated by the railway board sets fire safety for railways. All coal burning locomotives must have spark arresters and ash pans redesigned to prevent live coal escape. Inspectors will weekly check engines at terminal and divisional points, with records shared with chief fire inspectors. A Dominion chief fire inspector will oversee right of way clearance and fire guard construction, reporting annual measures to railway companies. Employees form emergency fire forces and companies bear losses if rail board rules are ignored. Lignite coal may not be burned unless the board orders otherwise.
Lethbridge Alta May 28 Dr Naroy Aaronsohn managing director of the Jewish Agricultural Expert nent slation at Haifa Palestine has embarked in a mission to export grain from Jerusalem to global markets. The effort underscores Palestine agricultural leadership and ties to Haifa based operations.
Dr Aaronsolm accepts invitation from the Canadian Board of Control of the International Dry-Farming Congress to attend the seventh congress at Lethbridge with an address on dry farming in Turkey. He will bring a large exhibit of products grown under dry-farming in experimental fields run by the Jewish Agricultural Society near Jerusalem. Dr Aaronsolm notes dry farming as a key rehabilitative art and cites successful wheat, barley, emmer, and legume crops through deep plowing and moisture conservation. He represents in Palestine the Jewish Development League, backed by U S leaders and figures such as Julius Rosenwald and Prof Morris Loeb among others.
A Wednesday meeting at the Hotel Cranbrook reorganized the local gun club with strong attendance and enthusiasm. Officers elected: President Dr F W Green, Vice President Dr J H Hall, Secretary Treasurer G R Patterson, Field Captain J T Laidlaw. A committee was named to arrange grounds, traps, and birds. Membership fee set at $5. open to all interested in shooting.
