Manager Cronin reorder opens full operation at St Eugene mine to fulfill a Germany ore contract, adding about 200 workers as trains bring in labor. A new sawmill by Grant & Sheady near the C P R station aims for 40 000 feet daily by mid June, boosting Moyie’s timber output and regional economy. Local projects include Harold Pollard completing a cedar dam on Campbell Creek, and a planned Empire Day celebration with a picnic and forest performance.
A freight train derailment near Sparwood Hosmer on the Michel river ends in the death of head brakeman Claude Barney. Engineer Wardman and fireman Cook survive with minor injuries. Barney’s body remains beneath the wreckage as rescuers work to remove the engine and tender.

Two day carnival of sports organized by the Turf and Athletic association set for Cranbrook on May 27 and 28. The Townsite company lays out thirteen blocks just south of the town for residential use. Several streets will be opened for traffic from the Presbyterian church east and west to the English church, from A Moffat's house to the creek, and from the English church north to town limits. The changes promise a long awaited improvement for the town.
Neil McL Curran financial agent for the North Star mine arrives with Mrs Curran and daughter to report resumed shipping but at a reduced scale due to the lead market. He notes a general mining downturn with BC stock losses from 35 million to 5 million, a drop of about 30 million.
The Galena Kansas Republican notes sharp changes in fortune among lead miners. It cites men who quickly moved from penniless to able to draw large checks, a former tramp turned hotel porter, a man who borrowed for milk now seeking more, and others jailed for check fraud as the boom busts unfold.
It is anticipated a large crowd will travel from Cranbrook to Fernie on the 24th for both baseball and football. A special train will run at a reduced rate, offering a nine trip and a good time for many who attend.
Mr W Blakemore, ex general manager of the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Co, visits Fernie for summer work in the Kootenays. Fernie hosts a May 13 wedding for Albert Gee and Susie Graham of Toronto. A Fernie May 29 celebration includes baseball against Cranbrook, with football and lacrosse on the program. Fort Steele Brewing’s Bailey resigns. South East Kootenay license commissioners meet May 25 in Cranbrook over a Crowe Nest hotel license.
A large Cranbrook audience applauded the Mass presented at Methodists Church directed by Mrs. W T Reid. The event showcased a skilled 30 40 voice chorus with strong soloists and an orchestral backing, drawing high praise and urging a repeat performance later in the season. Conductor Mrs. Reid led, with accompanist Mrs Costigan and several named musicians and chorus members listed.
Fort Steele notes show extensive development on Tracy creek claims by E Elwell at Jew Fraction, with Bill Nye soon to commence on Trail creek. The Bill Nye lead spans ten feet and carries gold copper and galena. Prospector activity includes Tom Bevens and Charles Van Blake heading to Finley creek for placer gold. Cranbrook visitors A Parker W D Hill and W Dunlap registered at the Imperial. Mr and Mrs George Gilpin visited Steele. C F Hannington departed for the east.
