The town observed Queen Victoria's birthday with flag decorations and a day full of sports at the grove across the lake. An orchestra accompanied dances at the Kootenay hotel and Mc Gregor's hall, ending with a late supper and further dancing.
Large crowds thronged Cranbrook for a two day sporting carnival with field games and top class horse racing. The St Eugene district ran full, while Moyie Lumber moves to a new sawmill site near the narrows and shows potential rich lead and silver finds near Kitchener. Football and track events featured Cranbrook, Fernie, Kimberley, and Calgary riders with multiple wins and close finishes.
The Cranbrook events featured a lively heat speed program in East Kootenay with Kimberley entries Slippery Dick Deceit and Roy Carruthers winning several trots and dashes. A Fernie versus Cranbrook baseball game impressed spectators as crowds praised Cranbrook as a strong season host and townsite.
A Fernie report recounts a Chinese convert puzzled by a church plate asking what the money was for. Five men were jailed after a Wednesday incident. Two bear cubs entertain guests at the Alberta hotel. A stolen commercial trunk eludes police. Miner Stephen Roman died after gas ignited his lamp in Coal Creek mines.
David McDonall and his son in law C. E. Morris of Lacombe Alberta spent several days in Cranbrook and vicinity last week. They formed a favorable impression of Cranbrook and plan to move there buying four lots in the Murphy McInnis block to build homes. McDonald is a rancher and Morris a hardware and machinery dealer who plan to enter the cattle business on a large scale in the valley.
Col Steele of Strathcona's Horse prepares to depart for South Africa to serve a year as district commander of the Baden Powell Police. He says he does not expect to stay beyond a year and believes Canada remains superior.
J C Drewry and Hugh Sutherland visited North Star mine amid talks on placer work on Upper Mogie. Ottawa debated a five year bounty of five dollars per ton on refined lead to support Canadian production, with July 1 1902 start and up to one hundred thousand dollars yearly.
In town yesterday E. S. Pollard described his Palmer Mountain property as looking well after a rock crushed finger incident. He noted a shaft at fifty feet and several inches of solid high grade galena.
G. J. Morrow a leading South East Kootenay figure, former C P R E accountant and Granville hardware books manager, sails with wife and baby to Granville Ont and then likely to New York or Boston for Havana bound rail project work with the Van Horne syndicate. He will be missed in Masonic circles and by many friends. Mrs. Morrow active in social and church life also leaves a large circle of friends. The Herald extends best wishes for health and prosperity.
Mr Freeman of Elkhorn visits Cranbrook with friend G T Boxers. He travels through British Columbia from Golden and praises Cranbrook as one of the prettiest towns he has seen.
