The St Eugene quarantine ends and a full workforce runs 120 to 140 tons of ore daily. Nearby, Grant & Sheady establish a large Moyie timber camp and plan a 2,000,000 foot log supply for a new sawmill to be located south of town between the station and the St Eugene concentrator.
The Herald reports Fernie’s booming coal industry with a large new brewery by Mearrs Sick Mautz and Scott. Visitors tour No 1 mine with electric coal train, view 5600 feet of tunnels and 312 coke ovens, while wages total over 36000 last month. The piece notes Fernie’s future as a regional metropolis and a Cranbrook football club reorganizes with new officers.
At noon we dined as guests of Harry Bentley at Green Cottage. We met the Herchmer brothers and Mr Randall who have formed a congenial circle living well on their own terms. They shared South Africa stories and showed modern gear from their recent return, illustrating how a group of friends can enjoy a lively time.
Early in the afternoon we traveled to the coal mines in a three seated rig with George Levasseur driving and Bentley Randall Armstrong and Keay in the party. We started at Fernie and rode up the gulch toward the sky mountain range, a valley far below on the other side. The view rewards the trip with George at the wheel.
Clarke reports from Manotick Ont that Will Clarke, who left with the Strathcona boys, has returned from South Africa. He saw Prank Rankin and Sam Rejotte in Ottawa and may travel to Cranbrook after visiting relatives.
Fire authorities warn the fire gong is to be rung only for fire alarms. Anyone misusing the gong or driving over hoses will be arrested and prosecuted. Statements attributed to F R Morris Constable J B Fink Fire Chief.
A Cranbrook board of trade meeting discussed sending Cranbrook delegates to Ottawa to lobby MPs for a lead refinery in Canada and related legislation. A committee was appointed to report later with names including James Ryan and W. T. Reid, while noting dangers of bogus mining schemes and urging legitimate mining in Kootenay.
Managing Director Drewry reports The St Eugene Consolidated Mineral company Ltd paid a 105000 dollar dividend for the quarter ending December 1900, amounting to 3 percent on capitalization. Our share was 19200.00. End of 1900 issued capital stood at 400000.00 with 400000.00 par value unissued. A 3 percent quarterly dividend on issued stock was declared in November and paid. The St Eugene mill now handles 400 tons daily, double the size of any Canadian concentrator, with two years ore supply blocked out and new reserves being developed.
S M Rajotte writes from Ottawa on March 15 1901 to describe Cranbrook companions bound for Halifax and Cape Town. He notes guard duties at the exposition grounds 24 hour shifts and hopes for an old time in Africa while awaiting uniforms and embarkation. He mentions friends Ike Foster Red Jack Billy Clarke Haines Shaw Rankin Henderson Cathcart and Tremain and sends regards to his circle back home.
Lieut Beer of Nelson who recruited men in the Kootenays for the South African police passed through for Ottawa to sail with the contingent. He has been appointed captain at a salary of 3000 dollars and perquisites. Mrs Beer will join him in Africa during the summer.
