Recruits for Baden Powell's police depart Moyie after a Sunday send off. Inquests, arrests, and smallpox reports fill Moyie news as Frank Rankin leads South East Kootenay contingent through Cranbrook to Ottawa. Archival notes capture Moyie progress, rail torpedo jolts, and local obituaries of figures like Jack the mule.
The third annual convention of the Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia opened in Greenwood with 39 delegates and three proxies. Motions reaffirmed favored railway openness and open trade policies, with debates on chartered railways and rate controls. Delegates discussed routes to Golden and Vernon, a planned Kootenay-Central line, and the coast to Kootenay rail link, while endorsing a sanitarium for consumptives and naming C Scott Galloway president for the year.
Superintendent Bury ordered a larger station platform which has been completed and praised as a major improvement. An office opened at the freight house for Coleman's staff with Mallory taking charge of tickets. Grace of the Fort Steele Prospector welcomed the eastbound passenger train. Coleman becomes chief clerk, replacing Sheppard, while Bell the traveling auditor visited Cranbrook. TL O Hagan went to Fort William due to his father’s illness.
Cranbrook residents met at W. Hyde Baker's office to form an agricultural society and plan a fall fair. A 11-member board of directors was chosen led by A Moffat as president and James Ryan as vice president with James Gill as secretary. A follow up meeting will arrange preparations for a grand district exhibition in a central, accessible Cranbrook location.
The Nelson Tribune accuses the False Reporte of misrepresenting smallpox in South East Kootenay. It says Fernie Fort Steele Cranbrook Moyle had no current cases beyond one cured case in Fernie and a Spokane-derived Moyie case under control. The Herald urges accuracy and asks The Tribune to rectify statements.
Weather this week was warm with persistent drizzle. The St Eugene concentrator started last Thursday and has run at full capacity since, making another shutdown unlikely due to water supply.
The Moyie census puts population at 845 with 150 miners from St Eugene away, totaling about 1000. The Moyie Miners Union ordered a three story building with shops on the ground floor and an opera house above. Ore developments accelerate at several mines including Aurora and Society Girl, and Kootenay hotel additions near completion. February attendance at Cranbrook public school shows the new building occupied since February 18 with three divisions. Teachers urge parents to send children regularly and punctually, noting ample accommodation in the schoolrooms.
Two hundred recruits for the Baden-Powell constabulary depart Winnipeg by special train today. They are joined by detachments from Pincher Creek Macleod Lethbridge Calgary Maple Creek Prince Albert Moosomina Regina among others, totalling about two hundred.
CPR officials headed by J Oborne and others visited Cranbrook from Winnipeg to discuss expansion plans for the Crows Nest division. They met merchants, toured the town, and entertained at dinner with Superintendent Bury, praising Cranbrook as a lively western town. They planned to travel to Kootenay Landing, returning the next day.
Mr Angus McCloud reports ongoing work on the Approach claim with substantial concentrating ore indicating the vein draws near. The Neidig family returned from Ontario on Monday. James McMillan, longtime placer miner, is ill at Fort Steele hospital. Fred Bivmore moves into a new home. Rumor swirls that a major Estella road long tunnel encounter has been struck.
Citizens and businesses urged to begin spring cleaning as weather allows. Clean streets alleys yards, curb waste, and stop disposing refuse on ground to prevent typhoid risk. Each resident to straighten wood piles and tidy storefronts for a better town appearance.
Work began this week on a new Baptist church in Cranbrook to be completed quickly. The building will be two stories high with an alcove and plastered throughout, occupying a premier site midway between the Catholic church and Baker hill. Five churches now line the same street. In Fernie, Dr Barber is recovering well and the Royal hotel quarantine has been lifted.
