Sinking of the Empress of Ireland near Rimouski
The Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence near Rimouski after a collision with the collier Biorstadt. Of 1,487 aboard, 22 died and many injured survived in lifeboats amid wreckage. Rescue ships Eureka and Lady Evelyn saved 399. Captain Kendall and other officers were among the rescued.

Children Crown the Queen of May at St Marys Church
At St Marys Church Sunday evening the May exercises closed with twenty five white dressed girls marching in, led by a flower girl and crown bearer. Miss Frances Drummond and Miss Dorothy Mackey sang solos while Miss Della Greaves played the organ. Rev Father Welch urged parents to model virtuous lives and children to seek prayer for lifelong grace and salvation. The children in charge were praised for their singing and marching.

Fire claims life of four year old Flora Woods
Four year old Flora Woods daughter of J W Woods, a butcher for P Burns and Co, burned to death last Sunday afternoon after her clothing ignited while playing with other children in the alley behind their home above the Kootenay Butcher Co market. Though Mr Carson and his son tried to help, she died later at St Eugene hospital around 6 30 pm. The cause remains unknown with children saying they were not playing with matches. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 pm at the Methodist church conducted by Rev W E B Danham.

Funeral of W. M. Park in Cranbrook
Funeral services for W. M. Park were held last Saturday afternoon with large Knights of Pythias attendance and Uniform Bank pallbearers. The cortege moved from Castle Hall to the residence then to Presbyterian church under Rev. W UK Thompson, with interment at Cranbrook cemetery. Park, born in Watson Corners Ontario, married Emmeline Purdon in 1891 at MacDonald's Corners Ontario. The family previously resided at Pilot Mountain Manitoba. Floral tributes appeared from many city friends and Order of Railway Trainmen members attended. The notice expresses deep sympathy for the bereaved family amid their double tragedy.

Hindus Decide to Return to India from Canada
Vancouver June 2 The Hindu passengers aboard the Komagata Maru plan to abandon their attempt to enter Canada and will return to India. Gurdit Singh leads a party of about a thousand as they depart across the Pacific citing rejection of their British subject travel rights. Ottawa has made no exception, with Lord Hardinge and officials confirming the decision to withdraw from inquiry and not seek entry.
