Statistics from the Mountain Timber Manufacturers Association show 1816 lumber output rising 71 percent from 1815 to 270 000 000 feet. Sales reached 230 000 000 feet, up 26 percent. imports of western provinces rose 14 percent. The meeting in Nelson featured secretary LW Male presenting these figures and noted political dispatches and reassurances from officials.
Cranbrook promoter BJ C McKay announces a mutual agreement for a heavyweight championship bout in Lethbridge on the 25th with Leo Morrissey defending against De Thietor Ndorgon, terms to be finalized mutually.
An donation of $20 was sent to Miss Florence Erickson to purchase socks for hospital men in England. Since July, Mrs Sam Baldwin and Mrs Pare Baldwin have knitted 46 pairs, and Mrs A J Grace 26 pairs, with the Association thanking them for their splendid help.
Reports condemn unlawful dynamite shipments with fines up to five hundred dollars. A Canadian rail shipment from Lytownlee to Cheviot carried twenty pounds of dynamite in a marked box, prompting enforcement action. Included are war correspondence excerpts from Port Steele and Cranbrook noting injuries and frontline experiences.
Mr. Gifford Jr. of Spokane, owner of the controlling stake in Selkirk Mining Co., visited Marysville to review The Park Mine. He praised the property and expressed strong optimism about its future while Mr. Gifford Sr. manages operations. He returned to Spokane on Monday.
In Cranbrook on January 19 1917 a son was born to Mr and Mrs B H McPhee. The infant adds a new member to the McPhee household as relatives share the news.
A stove overheated starting a blaze in a one story frame house owned by John Czarny known as Black. Mrs Black escaped with her child through a bedroom window as fire and smoke filled the home. The living room and its contents were destroyed while bedroom and kitchen items suffered mainly smoke and water damage. The house carried $500 insurance with $100 on the contents.
Mr. Peterland of Wardner visited Cranbrook, staying a night, and disclosed the sale of his interests in the Crows Nest Pass Lumber Company to Chicago capitalists for about $100,000. He remains active in East Kootenay lumber and other enterprises, having helped build the Crows Nest and North Star branches and invested in Wardner and Marysville ranches, with plans to return to Cranbrook and be welcomed as a longtime contributor to the region.
Since the sale began Saturday morning the store has been crowded and goods moving rapidly. The CC is offering real bargain prices and has advertised heavily to attract Cranbrook buyers. Any unsold items will be packed and moved to another city, with prices slashed to unload furniture dishes and other house furnishings.
Pictured is Capt. Lister formerly a lieutenant with Worden's Warriors now earning a captain's commission and the Military Cross for gallantry in battle. A Boer War veteran, he hails from Cranbrook and is praised by Pte Wim Williamson of Baynes Luke in a Canadian convalescent hospital note.
Friday meeting elected officers for the year including Regent Mrs Leslie and 1st vice president Mrs MacKinnon. Reports cover sewing, knitting, packing and donations to several funds with many named members contributing.
A new girls club named Seager Heart Club was organized in the Parish Hall on Tuesday with 21 chartered members. Officers include Rev. W H Bridge as president, Mrs. Fenwick and Mrs. Reed as vice presidents, Doris Wallinger as president, Gladys Parnaby as vice president, Edith Macdonald as junior treasurer, Muriel Jr and Alice Brake as janitors. A Junior and Senior Group will run its affairs with activities in Plysteal Culture, choral work, embroidery, cooking, and demonstrations.
The Christ Church annual meeting reviewed a bold plan to become a community force in education social and spiritual work. The rector urged defined policy on Prohibition social vice gambling and lawlessness while members faced heavier responsibilities and possible temporary decline in numbers. The vote of confidence in Rector Bridge was passed and reports showed sound finances and committee appointments for the year with total revenue 1186.08 and expenditures 943.09.
The Tea Committee chaired by Mrs Thompson and Mrs Rich es meets on the second and fourth Tuesday in the Parish Hall at 6 p.m. Other members include Mrs Hogarth Mrs Crebbin Mrs FLW Green and Mrs Miles.
