The Board of Trade held its annual meeting Tuesday with a growing turnout. J P Fink was elected president for 1921, W R Grubbe as vice president and T M Roberts as auditor. An active program including monthly meetings and a possible paid secretary was debated.
The Cranbrook fathers and sons will attend an 8 pm Friday YMCA event featuring an informal program with quartettes, short talks by fathers and sons, songs, games, and refreshments. The program includes hymns, prayers, addresses by W M Armstrong J Sproull and others, toast exchanges, instrumental solo, and a camp theme with evergreen decorations.
Special to the Herald reports Ottawa has signaled possible 1921 22 funds for extending the Dominion Government telegraph system from Fairmont Hot Springs toward Canal Flats or possibly Wasa. A southward extension would add about 22 miles, bringing Wasa near the northern terminus of the Kootenay Central lines and linking Golden Cranbrook Spokane Vancouver and Calgary. Further plans foresee a Banff Windermere trunk road line to Banff enhancing eastward communication.
Nelson faces CBC in a Saturday night game with an 8 46 start for a double header at a new gallery seating about 200 spectators. A 26 cent admission applies. Wednesday night featured a 67 13 High School over CPR and a 15 7 Blue Jackets win over the High School. Upcoming March 2 sees Bimboos vs Maple Leafs in ladies play and Bantams vs Buffs in men’s. The club forms an entertainment committee and outlines a busy slate of dances, socials, children’s parties, whist drives, a book shower and musical night to raise funds and boost activity. Plans include junior and boys training, gym classes, and potential orchestra and dramatic club. A March 3 meeting of the committee is scheduled at 8 o’clock at Mrs Boreau’s home.
Members are urged to submit entertainment suggestions via the suggestion box. Membership is yearly. dues in arrears lead to automatic suspension until paid. The club plans summer openness for swimming pool and tea room plus athletic and social events, aiming to keep the facility active and beneficial for the community.
On February 17 the Womens Institute honored Mrs. Maystre on her ninety first birthday at her home. Guests included her daughters Mrs. Hilton Yahk and Mrs. Maystre, with Mrs. Wolfe at the door and refreshments by Messrs Clapp O'Hearn and Campbell. The milestone drew many friends who offered flowers and gifts before an evening whist party capped the cheerful day.
Two Cranbrook rinks traveled to Fernie to challenge for the Fleishman Cup in a two-game, simultaneous match. The Fernie club held the Cup as the visitors lost by a combined 22 to 21, with Cameron winning his game by one point and Hogarth two points down.
Grace Madelyn Carson of Slaterville married Charles Leonard Ryder in a Monday ceremony at the Methodist Parsonage with Rev. R. W. Lee officiating. The bride, a Vanguard teacher, was attended by sister Christine Carson. groom’s attendant was G. Rouse of Vanguard. They will live on Wycliffe Road near the hospital.
Cranbrook Curling Club announces winners for four trophies after the Grand Challenge, Cosmopolitan, Galt, and Fink finals. Grand Challenge winners include R. Cakin skipped by D Burton with H B Hicks. Fink Cup goes to A Ward with B Ward. Cosmopolitan Cup to EB McPhee with J P McLaren. Galt Cup to G Leitch skipped by W Hall with J H Cameron. Corby Competition still has one to three games remaining.
The Rail Merchants Association of Canada local branch met at City Hall with increased attendance. Bruce Brown re elected Secretary pro tem as officers were chosen: EB H. McPhee President, C. P. McDonald 1st Vice, W. H. Wilson 2nd Vice, S H R Hinton Treasurer, B. Paterson Auditor. Secretary to be appointed by the executive. affiliation planned with BC Provincial and Dominion associations to expand its scope. Local fundraising in stores to continue.
Preparations for a major basketball exhibition Saturday at the Recreation Club feature a north balcony addition costing about 500 dollars. The Nelson team, with international exposure, faces Cranbrook’s local lineup including Crowe Argue Gill McTier and a yet to be chosen centre. Admission is 25 cents with strong local practice backing the show.
An open letter from P Woods dated February 21, 1921 in Cranbrook British Columbia invites stock breeders of the district to organize a governing body to address stock laws, branding, hide selling, and seasonal breeding issues. He urges a March 2 meeting at the city hall to begin collective action and warns that without unity and effort the range may fail.
At a recent Associated Boards of Trade session a plan to build a large iron and steel plant in the interior of British Columbia was discussed. The venture involves about 100 million dollars and could receive provincial support. J H Falconer and J B Thomson urged government backing as “certain gentlemen” ready to invest significant sums if encouraged. The resolution passed stating the government will be justified in supporting the iron and steel industry in the province.
Ontario weekly obituary notes the death of James C. Taylor aged about 91 in McNab Arnprior area. Born in Scotland he emigrated at eleven and farmed before moving to Stewarton Arnprior. Survived by seven sons two daughters 32 grandchildren and a brother. Funeral held Wednesday at Arnprior cemetery with Rev H W Clift officiating.
The Cranbrook Farmers' Institute annual meeting reviewed C P R plans for a kiosk display near the depot to showcase district mineral and other products and possibly host the local Colonization Department offices. The group approved pushing for site examination and future action.
