The organizers announce the first awarding date is moved to Saturday April 9 to allow all contestants to begin work fairly. Entries remain open and participants are urged to start immediately. Zach could win some prizes.
A newspaper promotes a subscription drive offering free one year of Farm Life magazine to yearly subscribers during the Popular Girl Contest. Readers gain votes for their favorite contestant and a chance to win prizes including a $400 piano, with two subscriptions for the price of the paper.
The Womans Club of this city held a St Patrick’s Day banquet in church parlors with a two course dinner served by the ladies of the M E ebarth. The event featured a program at Mr and Mrs J Loeb’s home including a paper on St Patrick and a comic farce The Peek Sisters performed by eight members. Invitations extended to Miss Elizabeth Barnhart of Attica and other guests.
The paper lists initial contestants named by friends for a new piano and prize giving contest. Friends of additional participants from any town or township are invited to submit names. The person sending the successful contestant’s name will win one of two $25 gold watches. The list currently includes Troy Township and Covington.
Construction of the Rink Opera House is planned to start April first. Subscriptions have begun with about two thousand dollars from around two hundred supporters. The writer thanks donors and urges more contributions through the O K restaurant or James Slim at Fountain Trust Company building. A new line of collapsible Go-Carts is announced by M Boord.
A basketball game is set for tonight at Y M C A Hall between Hillsboro High School and the YMCA team. Admission is 20 cents for general and 15 cents for ladies, with the match called at 7 p.m. Supporters are urged to attend.
The Executive Committee appointed O. P. Lewis Covington L G Riggin Attica Hardy Sanger Veedersburg Perry Glasscock Kingman and H. H. Elwell Yeddo to the county central committee. The committee members are described as Republicans of the square and honest type and are expected to aid the Republican organization.
Friends of W. R. Sharon, 82, mourn an accident while removing an old fence at DeHaven cemetery. A buried wire snapped free, piercing his eye and injuring the eyeball above the sight. Dr. Andrus treated the wound, and Sharon rests as well as could be expected.
T H McGeorge Jr Co held its annual imple ment and buggy display and Season Opening last Thursday to Saturday. Crowds toured an immense display of goods while firm representatives explained offerings. A pumpkin guessing contest drew about eight hundred guesses. 495 seeds were found, with only J R Royse of North Vermillion correctly guessing the number. Second prize went to Mrs Albert Hacker of Lower Warren. third to W E Osborn. fourth and fifth to Schuyler Rhodes and Ephraham Crigger after a redraw among 500. Names tied to 500 included Schuyler Rhodes Miranda Coffing Mrs G C Tyler Darcy Smith H C Wilson Eph Crigger and John T Rhodes.
It is understood that the young men of Williamsport and West Lebanon are planning to organize a militia company. There is a fine lot of material for such an organization in Warren county and as they have never had a company of any kind since war days, it is thought the organization will be an easy matter.
Mrs Elisabeth Brant Reed, wife of Sampson Reed, died at home on Liberty street after two months of grippe complications. Funeral at the residence followed by simple rites conducted by Rev Dougherty and interment at Mt Hope Cemetery. She was a lifelong Methodist, 71 years old, born June 26 1838, survived by husband, a sister, a brother, and many relatives.
Parmer McMahon announces the opening of a feed store this week in Steely room on Fourth street. The farmer brings his usual energy to the venture and is poised for success.
Henry H. Brant, a leading Waynetown resident and longtime county figure, died at his home Monday evening last week from a stroke. Aged over 70, he spent his life in the township and traced kinship to the Brant family of Mohawk Valley. He was brother to the late Mrs. Sampson Reed of this city, who died last Saturday and was buried Monday.
Lamm and Company tailors will be present at J Loebs Stores on March 31 for fitting and selection of garments. The notice outlines a scheduled event with location in the city retail space and invites customers to visit.

Miss Nannie Shuff daughter of Mr and Mrs David Shuff in the northeast city died Tuesday evening at 10 from spinal meningitis after a two week illness. She was just past 21 and had been in health with a life of promise. Funeral services by Rev Dougherty at the M E church at 2 pm Thursday, interment in Mound Prairie cemetery. The family came from Virginia.
Florist W C Welchel and wife faced a serious health crisis after a nervous collapse in Danville. Doctors consider brain base issue possibly requiring an operation. The Welchels, longtime Riverview fruit farm developers, are supported by many friends as they seek recovery. Mrs Lee Faust and Miss Lanis shopped in Indianapolis for Easter Pattern Hats.
Retailer J Loes’s Stores says with every dollar’s worth of merchandise sold customers will receive a cash premium of cents starting Monday March 28. The offer applies to all goods in stock and runs for a limited time.
Elyria Chronicle reports R H Green captured in a barn with four stolen horses in northern Ohio. Will Calvert learns Green used Indianapolis tactics, barned horses in Cleveland, with Ohio prosecutors seeking trial there. If convicted in Elyria, Green faces at least 23 years. Indiana awaits further term. Green escapes Monday by slugging a turnkey, stealing keys, freeing another thief, and evading pursuers.
