Tariff Bill Promoted as General Downward Tendency
Washington Aug 4 The tariff bill reported by conferees was presented by Chairman Payne to the House with an exhaustive analysis. The measure reduces rates on necessaries of life while lifting some luxuries, notably cutting iron ore from 40 to 15 cents a ton and pig iron from 4 to 2.50, with steel rails and other metal items cut about 50 percent. Hides become free, petroleum largely duty free, and lumber, coal, and leather goods see notable changes as the cotton schedule is rewritten to resist court- driven reductions.
