Weighting and tire choice affect tractor drawbar power
Ex tension engineer Bob Durland explains how weight, tire size, and soil type govern drawbar horsepower. A 100 PTO hp tractor yields about 96 hp to the rear axle, with 75 hp in firm soil when weighted correctly and up to 43 hp in sandy soil with wheel slip. He offers a 10 minute field test using chalk marks, stakes, and a tillage implement to measure slip and aim for 10–15 percent slip for optimum performance.
