Economist predicts no PIK in 1984
Dr John Marten of Farm Journal spoke at PCA meetings in River Falls and Independence last spring predicting no payment in kind or paid diversion for 1984. He said 1983 corn may yield about 102 bushels per acre and 5.3 to 5.4 billion bushels produced if 1980 conditions return. He warned of a $40 million repayment to the Treasury and limited non paid acreage reductions, with policy likely shifting away from government programs in 1985 and beyond.

Heberts expect fifth alfalfa crop on 42 acres at Eagle Prairie Farm
At Eagle Prairie Farm near Chippewa Falls Wisconsin the Hebert family plans a fifth alfalfa crop after Oct 15. Their direct seeded fields, seeded in 1980, produced four cuts with rain timing aiding growth this season. Hay tests show 22 24 percent protein with silage at 23 percent, and fertilizer plans include extra potash per acre to support the fifth cut.
