Second dairy assessment looms for Wisconsin farmers

The second 50 cent dairy assessment starts tomorrow, adding to the first 50 cent deduction from dairy checks since April 1. Dr. Bob Cropp of the University of Wisconsin predicts the typical Wisconsin dairy farmer could lose about 5300 dollars annually, a 38 percent drop, unless actions like reducing production or refunds alter the impact. He notes Congress may overturn the deductions when they reconvene September 12, offering hope, while acknowledging potential paperwork for milk plants.

Law changes key to better hunter access in Wisconsin

An advisory council recommended expanding state assistance and incentives for private landowners to improve wildlife habitat while allowing hunter access. The 32 recommendations to the Natural Resources Board include tax benefits, cost sharing, and liability protections, plus new habitat managers and a Wisconsin Wildlife Fund. ASCS to spot-check top PIK participants in state

State ASCS officials defend mandatory spot checks on the largest PIK participants to preserve program integrity. The top 3 percent of PIK farmers, by corn base, are targeted to verify on ground corn and conserve base acreage, amid controversy from Wisconsin Corn Growers Association president Craig Guthrie who calls the checks discriminatory. The article notes tolerances for PIK participants and denies a full audit, listing top two participants in 19 counties with their corn bases and expected CCC payments this fall.
