The 20th annual feeder cattle sale at Equity Livestock Co op, sponsored by the Northern Wisconsin Beef Producers Co op, grossed 347 749 on 1 135 head for an average 56 1 cents a pound. A year earlier 1 211 head averaged 69 8 cents and in 1979 1 044 head averaged 80 4 cents.
Last week's first snow touched raspberry plants as buyers packed the Saturday feeder sale where 684 steers and 449 heifers sold. Prices ranged to 59,654 dollars by a Spring Grove feedlot buyer. John Neuman paid 52,893 dollars for 207 head. An extra sale is planned Nov 7 at Equity yards with 600 feeders hoped for.
Land O Lakes Inc and Midland Cooperative Inc directors approved final plans to merge Midland into Land O Lakes. The combined coop would be the nations second largest farm cooperative with 1980 sales around 3.3 plus 0.524 billion. A membership vote is set for Nov 30.
In Barron County near Chetek and Rice Lake four of 15 wells in potato growing areas contained aldicarb traces but none exceeded the EPA limit of 10 parts per billion. The DNR warns the test is a screening effort and monitoring will continue with more counties added.
