US cropland outlook under world demand pressure survey finds limited convertible land
The USDA Soil Conservation Service report from 1975 analyzes 41 000 sites in 506 counties across all states and territories. It shows cropland fell from 431 to 400 million acres, urban expansion and water areas consuming millions of acres, with most new cropland needing conversion from pasture, range, or forest, while high quality land remains scarce and costly to convert.
