Senate panel votes to delay wheat marketing referendum
The Senate Agriculture Committee passed by voice vote a bill giving the agriculture secretary power to postpone a producer referendum on wheat marketing quotas for 1986. The secretary could delay the referendum until no later than 30 days after adjournment of the first session of the 99th Congress. The current law requires a referendum by August 1 for the year a national quota is proclaimed, a deadline that would apply to the 1986 crop unless new law suspends it. John Block has proclaimed quotas for the 1986 wheat year beginning June 1 and set the referendum for July 19 through 26.
