Suit filed over abuse case at Golden Horseshoe Stable
A civil suit in Brown County seeks to restrict Lois Watermelen from owning animals and operating a riding stable after 30 horses 22 dogs and seven goats were seized from Golden Horseshoe Stable in Suamico following a sheriff’s seizure two weeks ago. The county asks $5 038 for care costs and $1 051 in unpaid fines dating to 1982 with the animals housed at the Brown County Fairgrounds since May 14. The suit could allow sale of the animals to recover costs if Watermelen loses. Local officials describe a decade of related enforcement actions and ongoing neglect concerns based on veterinary reports and police findings.

Quagga Genes Cloned by UC Berkeley Scientists
UC Berkeley researchers report cloning about 25 000 gene fragments from a 100 year old quagga tissue sample. Some fragments match zebra genes while others diverge from known horse lines. The work, funded by NIH and NSF, aims to resolve the quagga’s closest relatives and proves ancient DNA can be obtained from long dead animals.
