Dunn County tests grass strip shelterbelts to curb wind erosion
Ed Weber of the Soil Conservation Service supervised a pilot test across 800 acres of center pivot irrigated cropland in Dunn County. Grass strips and edge plantings were evaluated to reduce soil losses, with 4 tons per acre per year the target from current 8 tons. District 1 Board OKs 1983 Budget and Storage Plans
Eau Claire District 1 Vocational Technical and Adult Education approved a 1983 budget of 13.2 million and discussed two new storage buildings at the west campus on North Clermont Avenue. Bids open June 3 and contracts June 10. A public hearing June 14 at 7:30 p.m. will review the district budget. Wayne Atkins reported $846,243 in federal funds for instructional improvements including Career Planning Center and computer assisted instruction.

Sparta dairy breakfast marks June Dairy Month event
The Monroe County Dairy Promotions Committee hosts its annual June Dairy Month Breakfast on June 5 at the Richard and Carol Schauf farm three miles north of Sparta on Hwy 27. Free ham and cheese omelets, muffins, yogurt cake, sun daes and milk accompany barn tours, machinery displays, farm animals for kids, a cheese sale and educational exhibits. The committee, a nonprofit of dairymen bankers milk processors and merchants, promotes dairy product use in Monroe County and nearby areas.
