Two silvery headed ospreys in Chippewa County have nested atop a tamarack near a swamp, tending two eggs. The birds undertake a 6000 mile fall-wac migration to Chile and back each year, often returning to the same nest, which is now missing after six weeks.
Wisconsin DNR tracks osprey recovery with a three year program to monitor nests, protect sites, and boost productivity. The Chippewa County pair rebuilt atop a remaining snag after a August windstorm toppled their former home. DNA biologists estimate about 10 percent of nests fail yearly from storms, and the project aims to sustain a 1.2 fledglings per occupied territory rate to remove ospreys from the endangered list.
