Surpluses Seen in 1978 Farm Inputs and Machinery Demand
Wisconsin economists William Saupe and Hugh Cook warn of slack demand and excess production capacity across farm inputs, pesticides and machinery this year due to lower farm income and the federal set aside program. Energy costs rise five to ten percent while fertilizer and nitrogen prices may fall as production expands. Farmers face tighter credit, with loan demand up and some dealers likely to raise prices on repairs and used equipment, possibly shrinking small dealers and increasing real estate loan activity through FmHA.
