Real farm bill push begins in Wisconsin Groundswell

Prairie Farm advocate Tom Saunders says the real fight for farm policy reform is just starting as Senate introduction of The Farm Policy Reform Act of 1985 gains support. Groundswell coalition backs price supports tied to parity and supply management, with Wisconsin farmers projected to gain up to 45 million in county income and up to 4 billion statewide if enacted.

Farm state backing saves deficit plan in Senate vote

President Reagan's deficit reduction package relied on farm state support as Senators Andrews and Zorinsky backed it with promises of smaller agriculture cuts. The package restored billions to soil and water programs, cut commodity price supports less than requested, and added an export subsidy to boost U.S. farm goods abroad. Critics like Harkin denounced the deal as unfair to farmers, while Dole framed the vote as stabilizing for agriculture. The Agriculture Committee will still shape final language.
