Harkin plan ties land retirement to higher farm support
A dozen Democrats propose sweeping farm policy changes centered on land retirement and higher price supports for wheat and corn. The plan raises consumer food costs about 13 billion dollars annually and shifts subsidies toward higher prices while requiring idle land and stricter production limits. It envisions a four year referendum on key crops, a 30 million acre retirement program, and expanded food aid alongside farm subsidies.

Dane County publisher named to state Agriculture Board
Anthony Earl nominated veteran Dane County publisher and farmer to a six year term on the state Agriculture Board replacing Floyd Holloway of Union Grove. Harland Everson, 67, a former six term Dane County state Assembly member, was also nominated for the seven member board. Everson must be confirmed by the state Senate and would join holdovers Carol Ward Knox Betty Roe and Louis Wysocki as terms expire May 1 1987. No 1986 Agriculture Board appointments will be made unless vacancy occurs. Everson is the second newspaper editor named to a state board by Gov Earl joining Tom Lawin of The Country Today who was confirmed for the Natural Resources Board. Everson remains publisher of the Edgerton Reporter and lives with his wife and daughter.
