Good ration for beef cows gives calves a strong start
UW Extension livestock expert Richard Watthauer urged beef producers to optimize cow diets in the final pregnancy month. He cited Lancaster and Wyoming studies showing higher calf livability and weight gain with targeted total digestible nutrient intakes. He advised a 50 50 corn and forage plan, corn silage last 30 days, protein supplementation, and pastures of grass and trefoil to balance energy, protein, and harvest timing.

No Till Custom Planting Serves Monroe County Farmers
Leonard Schaitel operates western Wisconsin’s likely sole custom no-till planting service. Since 1980 he has run the operation for about 30 customers, planting 1,200 acres last year and expecting a larger 1982. He notes the costs, benefits, and soil conservation factors driving farmers to try no-till on sloped terrain.
