UW Extension economist Truman Graf outlined five year changes for dairy in Wisconsin and nationwide. Milk prices may rise to 12 per hundred, co-ops expand, Grade A dominance grows, plant mergers rise, and herd totals decline while per cow production climbs. US milk output rises 5 percent with 12 250 pounds per cow.
UW-Extension dairy economist Truman Graf told Pepin County farmers that protein pricing could be adopted by the state agriculture department, with recommendations due by fall. He warned of future regulations and possible production controls as testing and deductions for low protein become standard, noting demand for high protein milk affects cheese output and farmer profits.
Nearly 50 people attended a Jackson County informational session on sunflowers as a cash crop in west central Wisconsin. County Agent Dave Holcomb and UW Extension agronomist Ed Oplinger led the event with a panel of four local growers who grew sunflowers in 1977.
