Former Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz defended farm policy amid charges it depresses grain prices. He criticized the Carter administration for a cheap food policy, warned against stockpiling surpluses, and said Ford would have vetoed the 1977 Farm Bill. Butz also called the current situation a fabrication by ASCS officials and noted milk price supports and grain programs as missteps.
The Halamas, six miles east of Hwy 93 between Eleva and Independence, run a tight hog operation with 150 sows and 50,000 laying chickens. They plan to grow to 175 sows but avoid land or machinery excess, maintaining the same 80 acres for two decades. They earned the Wisconsin Feeder Pig Co op Top Producer trophy for 1977, the eighth in ten years, for producing the year’s most feeder pigs.
Preliminary figures show 711 Wisconsin farmers request enrollment of about 299,076 acres under the Farmland Preservation Act. St Croix County leads with 115 farmers on 27,415 acres, while Pierce County has 103 on 24,580 acres. Participation covers 1.57 percent of state farmland. eligibility begins in 1979.
