State regulators lack power to curb farm pollution wells

A Wisconsin legislative study committee heard that the state lacks authority to regulate chemical fertilizer storage disposal of animal wastes or septic tank pumpings and to prevent groundwater contamination from pesticides or underground tanks. DNR and county boards officials urged action, proposing state funds for pollution compensation and regional controls, while opponents warned about farmer competitiveness.

Anhydrous leak evacuation at Wisconsin fertilizer plant

An eight block area in Menomonie faced a two hour evacuation after anhydrous ammonia fumes leaked from a 30 000 gallon storage tank at a Farmers Union Co op plant. About 150 people left homes and 100 food plant workers plus UW Stout dorm residents were affected. 16 required hospital treatment for inhalation, including 10 firefighters. 2 600 gallons spilled after a truck driver failed to disconnect a hose, and crews shut the valve after about 30 minutes. The DNR said no lasting environmental damage occurred as most gas dissipated toward the Red Cedar River.
