Packers may reject whole herd buyout cattle says dairy operator

Dairy farmers sending entire herds including replacement heifers to market face rejection at packing plants. Norval Dvorak of Packerland Packing warns many young, unfinished heifers are not suitable for slaughter. He estimates 200,000 cattle could hit markets if Wisconsin farmers join the buyout, with 60,000 being replacement stock deemed undesirable for meat. He urges contingency plans to feed out these heifers and cautions on consumer meat quality and packer processing limits.

Iowa expert says spring soybean prices may rise

Iowa State University economist Bob Wisner cautions that despite a compromise farm bill, spring field work could lift cash soybean prices in central Iowa to about 5.20 to 5.25 per bushel for a limited period. He notes weather problems in 1985 could push prices higher, though U.S. carryover stocks near 600 million bushels may cap gains. The bill keeps the 5.02 loan rate for 1986 87, with potential cut to 4.77 if conditions warrant, and excludes an acreage reduction program.
