John Block announced his resignation as Agriculture Secretary next month after guiding Congress through a five year farm bill tying farming more to markets than subsidies. Block, 50, said he accomplished his main goal and believed now was the time to leave. Lyng is eyed as likely successor.
Governor Anthony Earl joined about 30 volunteers in Iowa County to harvest 200 bushels of corn from a three acre field as part of a pick and glean drive aiding farmers stranded by heavy snows. The first Wisconsin governor to visit Jonesdale wore boots and a farmer’s cap and urged city residents to help.
Twin Cities forecasters predict a drop in cold by Thursday with highs around 30 and teens Friday and Saturday. Low temperatures fall from the teens Thursday to near zero by Friday and Saturday, while precipitation remains unlikely.
Wisconsin artist Rick Kelley offers 150 of 580 prints of Last of the Crop to Groundswell, directing all proceeds to aid struggling farmers in Wisconsin and Minnesota with food and electricity. A second painting, Why This Land Is Our Land, also priced at 60 dollars per print, will fund further relief. Kelley plans to donate about sixty six thousand dollars if all prints sell. He emphasizes nonprofit distribution and urges buyers to mail 67.50 per print to cover postage and donation, with 60 dollars going to Groundswell.
