Somatic cell count option gains popularity with dairymen

In Wisconsin the somatic cell count SCC monitoring option has attracted over 600 dairy herds five years after its introduction by the Wisconsin Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative. Center manager Loren Cropp cites a surge from a local promotion and two supervisors enhancing outreach. The SCC test gauges udder health by cell counts, with counts above 800000 signaling infection and 400000 to 800000 in the caution range. In typical herds about 3 percent have clinical mastitis and 47 percent have subclinical forms, driving milk losses. Menomonie lab has tested for SCC since 1975 and serves multiple counties including Ashland Bayfield Buffalo Douglas Dunn Eau Claire Iron Pepin Pierce Trempealeau.
