Natural Resources Board Endorses 1981 Steel Shot Zones

Wisconsin's Natural Resources Board endorsed restoring a nearly identical steel-shot zone for waterfowl hunting as in 1979, with adjustments for Dane Waushara and Waupaca counties and the Koshkonong waters. The plan calls for steel shot within 150 yards of water in the Horicon zone and adjacent counties, continued gizzard surveys, and a three-year extended study period to refine zones and educate hunters on lead-poisoning issues.

Clark County forest marking system changes to save oaks

Clark County foresters switch from traditional marking to spray-paint oaks to be left standing as aspen is harvested in the next few years. About 40,000 acres of mature trees are slated for harvest from the 113,000 acre Clark County Forest to protect oak timber for future saw and veneer use. Foresters expect thickened shrub growth and better deer habitat after aspen removal. Also noted are wildlife and hunting concerns about lead and steel shot in waterfowl, and Canada geese population estimates in local reservoirs.
