Corn silage substitution requires mineral and protein adjustments
The hay crop was poor this year and many dairymen may substitute more corn silage in the dairy ration. Increase calcium with more corn silage, and raise protein since corn silage is only about 8 percent protein versus haylage at 16-20 percent. Watch energy intake to avoid cows getting too fat, especially late lactation and dry cows. Jerry Brett, St. Croix County Agent.
