Schmidtknechts Push to an All-Registered Herd Grows
The Schmidtknechts, farming in Garden Valley Buffalo County, aim for an all registered dairy herd. They produced 29,000 pounds of milk and 1,211 pounds of fat last lactation and plan to breed back in January with a Maryland stud service bull. If a bull calf is born, the service will buy it. Only four cows have gone to market for slaughter in the last 13 months. Family pride and strong production keep them at the barn at 5:30 a.m. Bob and Lorraine are aided by brothers Bernard and Jim, who each exceed 600 pounds of butterfat, a rare achievement among local farmers.
