State ag board seeks changes in marketing act
The Wisconsin state agriculture board approved revisions to the Agricultural Marketing Act to boost participation. The plan, forwarded to the Assembly agriculture committee as Assembly Bill 885, calls for marketing orders funded by producer assessments and administered by commodity boards. Louis Wysocki said the board’s suggestions address many earlier criticisms.

Wisconsin wetlands bill gains cautious support in Capitol
The Assembly Environmental Resource Committee heard AB 839 a compromise wetlands protection bill backed by DNR and agriculture boards. Major farm groups including Farm Bureau NFO and Wisconsin Farmers Union supported it at a November hearing. The measure emphasizes local zoning enforcement, exempts existing agricultural uses and five of ten growing seasons, and requires local ordinances after mapping. Critics say it is weak on judicial review and enforcement, while supporters cite potential loans for farmers and clarified exempted practices. AB 885, not splitting marketing orders from agreements, may be addressed at a January hearing in Appleton.
