He plans replacements with about 30 heifers tied to a purebred bull for spring calving. Efficiency gains are offset by a preference for haulage over haymaking, aided by plentiful haylage from a cool, wet spring. He emphasizes rigorous forage fertilization and a two-a-day haylage plus high moisture corn feeding regimen.
