Barron County honors conservationists in 1978 awards

Barron A western Barron County farmer Allen Libby received the Outstanding Conservation Farmer award for 1978 from the Barron County Soil and Water Conservation District at the district banquet. Recipients also included Frank Kelley Rice Lake for woodland management and Don Streuli for outstanding cooper­ator. Stan Bergum Rice Lake was named conservation educator of the year Maynard Ekern Cameron received the stream improvement award.

Wool Growers Hear Patchwork News at Annual Meeting

Members of the Great Lakes Wool Growers Association gathered on the UW River Falls campus to hear both good and bad news. The group reported net worth of 187 758.81 with liabilities of 2 113.70 as of Dec 31 1977 and noted North Central Wool Marketing Corporation net worth of 1 425 198.35. Election of three directors occurred with Rudy Erickson replacing Roland Marshall as Northwest District rep Willard Winchell re elected for Southeast District and Dennis Flemming unopposed for Illinois District. General manager Lloyd Eikum praised strong market conditions and noted the North Central Corporation marketed millions of pounds of wool in 1978. He warned that contamination of high quality wool with black polypropylene twine threatens the industry and urged use of paper twine. Dr Art Pope warned parasites rise, especially nematodirus, and urged pasture rotation and drenching with Tramisol to protect flocks.
