Frost Timing Swings Corn Yields, Ames Expert Says
Ames Iowa Robert Shaw a climatologist at Iowa State University warns that frost timing sharply lowers corn yields. A killing frost five days before maturity cuts 2.1 percent, ten days before reduces 4.2 percent, fifteen days 6.9 percent, twenty days 21.3 percent, and twenty five days before maturity 48.4 percent. Corn reaches maturity 55 days after silking and a 30 degree temperature damages plants though death depends on several factors.
