EPA mandates more farm chemical certification

The EPA will require 30 000 to 40 000 additional farmers to be certified to use granular corn rootworm chemicals starting next spring, with trainings about six hours and a $20 material fee. The measure, effective Sept 1 1985, aims to restrict use of any chemical that could contaminate groundwater. Officials caution the task is monumental but necessary and note current certified farmers total about 15,000.
