USDA projects brighter farm outlook with higher 1983 income

U S Department of Agriculture economists issue one of their rosiest forecasts in years. Net farm income for 1983 expected at 25 to 29 billion after inventory adjustments, boosted by higher government program benefits and lower production costs. Trade prospects with the Soviet Union and China seen improving amid new grain and textile agreements.

ADA milk funding approved by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board

Wisconsin ADA won a $1.8 million short term allocation from the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board’s Marketing Committee to fund ADA programs through year end. The grant, drawn from dairy farmer checkoff money, replaces a requested $2.4 million while ADA trims its 1983 budget and projects. The decision moves to the executive committee and then the full board for final approval.

State farmer degrees run in the family

Five FFA State Farmer Degrees in one family is rare. George Trim, his wife, and their four sons in Gale sville form a multi generation operation dating to 1871. The 620 acres include 50 acres owned by the sons, 150 rented, and Ed and Lori lease 307 acres nearby. The home herd of 45-50 Holsteins milks plus a 30 cow beef herd. The family implements AI since the 1940s and DHIA testing. All four sons have pursued farming while attending Gale-Ettrick Trempealeau High School farm program through Western Wisconsin Technical Institute.

Fall-like warmth expected in west central Wisconsin later this week

National Weather Service forecasters in the Twin Cities predict pleasant temperatures and fair skies from Thursday through Saturday. Highs around 80 degrees with overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s indicate a fall-like air mass moving into the region.

Area farmer jailed for selling mortgaged cattle

Oswald D. Thompson a 51 year old Madison area farmer was sentenced to one year in prison for illegally selling cattle mortgaged to the Farmers Home Administration. He pleaded guilty to conversion of property and the cattle served as collateral for about 20000.
