Canning firms face label variety and expansion risks
Cannery officials describe over 600 labels used on area grown vegetables. Indianhead Canning Co. of Bloomer leads with about 500 labels. The Bloomer plant, part of Big Stone Inc., employs about 150 in summer and weathered a 1977 tornado before expanding to 4000 acres of beans. Other firms like Friday and Gale pack under multiple labels and expect price rises to cover higher costs while exploring new packaging and overseas markets.
