Dairy herd buyout payouts top 1 million for 156 farms

U S Agriculture Department figures show more than 150 dairy farms will receive over 1 million dollars each in the herd buyout program. California leads with 73 such farms, Idaho hosts the largest single payment of 9.9 million to buy Matco Corp. Jerome County operation, total payouts near 240 million for quitting dairying, average payment 130 thousand, funded by a 40 cents per hundred milk deduction.

Florence County farmers seek hay relief amid drought

In Florence County Wisconsin drought leaves farmers hayless while the Deep South receives aid. Local agriculture agent Bill Anderson says no rain here while northeastern counties donate truckloads of hay. About 40 farmers may need 120000 to 240000 bales. Florence County plans $10000 emergency funds to cover delivery costs.

Ashland farmer survives bee attack under tractor tire

Ashland County farmer Steve Anderson, 34, describes a July 21 accident near Marengo that left him with broken ribs and tire marks, as bees swarmed during hay cutting. He jumped from a moving Massey Ferguson, tripped on a pipe, and the rear tire rolled up his body before relief arrived. Doctors say recovery will take six to eight weeks. He credits faith and unexpected help for his survival.
