Breeding Bird Atlas work opens new field in Maine

At the Maine New Hampshire border in mid July a new Breeding Bird Atlas program is described. Chandler Robbins, ornithology researcher in Wisconsin, and the author map and record 93 species across six quarter blocks, upgrading several to probable or confirmed breeders. The piece notes how atlas work tracks not just species presence but breeding behavior and fledgling data, and predicts similar efforts in Wisconsin with expected 90 100 breeding species per 58 square mile quadrant.

Public not anxious to split state DNA

Public hearings across Wisconsin found little desire to divide the Department of Natural Resources or relocate its headquarters. John Gower and DNR Secretary Anthony Earl said the task force favored a consolidated agency and kept the headquarters in Madison to stay connected with government. They noted wardens spend most time on fish and game matters.

State considering ban on Brule River tubing

A public hearing on the Brule River State Forest master plan featured debate over a proposed ban on tubing. Local businessman Jim Carlson argued littering is the issue and favored limits rather than a full ban, while Donald Simonds of Brule River Sportsmen supported the plan but opposed commercializing the river and said tubing should be barred as an offensive use. The NRB chair compared the case to other Wisconsin rivers, and intergroup intervention in environmental courts was discussed. The session also approved Tony Earl’s pay raise and merit increase.
