Price support cut sparks farmer protest in Washington
Critics call a proposed 2 cent cut in 1956 wheat price supports a body blow to American farmers while defenders say it matches expectations amid surpluses. The Agriculture Department plans support at 76 percent of parity, about $1.81 a bushel, versus $2.00 this year, pending a June 25 farmer referendum on marketing controls. If controls are rejected, the rate falls to 83 percent of parity, roughly $1.19 a bushel. Parity serves to secure fair farmer returns relative to costs.
