City leaders from three taxing bodies pledged a lower millage levy for Council Bluffs after real estate and personal property reappraisal. They emphasized equalization to reduce taxes, noting higher city valuations should reduce the millage despite not having a final figure until budgets are set.
Chicago investigators tentatively blame the LaSalle hotel fire on crossed wires behind a false ceiling in the Silver lounge, as they pursue $20,000 in jewelry, money, and clothing lost by victims. In Hastings Nebraska two light training planes collided about 300 feet above Hastings airport killing Warren Froscheuser 17 of Hastings and Donald Strawser 39 of Edgar. Froscheuser had just taken off and Strawser was entering the traffic pattern. Both were civilian students.
At the thirty-fifth annual convention in Des Moines the remaining members voted to adopt a new name for the group. The Iowa Leather Dealers Association will replace the old title as they close their ties to horse and buggy trade, ending their era.

A proposed consolidation of the Minden school district has been postponed by order of the Pontotaharrie county board of education. The consolidation application, recently rejected, was filed by Laura Leonarda and others.

Nielsen, a nursery man by day, devotes effort to singing and has helped produce the Civic Music group. The chorus performs three numbers including Romberg works Stout Hearted Men Have Dreams and It’s a Grand Night for Singing with William Niebuhr at the Hammond electric organ. Dick Walter Civic Music director conducts the chorus.
