Engineering consultants in Pierre will study changes to the Oahe spillway at the dam to save up to 10 million dollars. Six students from the state school for the blind in Tucson completed a 21 mile hike from Hopi Point to Bright Angel Point in 12 hours led by coach Charles A. Thornton. The group navigated treacherous terrain with a rope system and held onto each other for safety as they descended and ascended the canyon.

An eight member Soviet religious delegation led by Metropolitan Nikola of the Russian Orthodox Church landed in New York. They were welcomed by leaders of the National Council of Churches amid protests outside Idlewild Airport. The visit is sponsored by the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, an umbrella group representing major Protestant denominations with tens of millions of members.
