Bridge Collapse Traps Two Truck Drivers In Muscatine
Two truck drivers narrowly escaped injury when the 160 foot span of the Muscatine toll bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River. Jim Haynes 30 of Streator Illinois fled his Coca Cola loaded truck as the bridge went down, while William Wheatcraft 26 of Mansfield Ohio climbed over girders to escape. Wheatcraft was rescued. his truck sank with the bridge. Traffic on Highway 2 between Muscatine and the Illinois side was detoured through Davenport. The span on the Illinois side, about 65 years old, prompted immediate repair plans. Duane Allen Chelt 22 was charged with careless driving after a wreck on the bridge. The full bridge opened May 8 1891 and historical records note a span fell in 1899. Kent Feed Co provided free passenger service across the river from the Muscatine Power Boat Club dock to Illinois.
