A 9 year old Clinton girl Linda Stumbaugh was found badly beaten in a weeded area two blocks from home and taken to a hospital in very serious condition. A basal skull fracture was reported by the attending physician. Police say the girl was not criminally assaulted and Officers found a seven pound blood stained rock and a bloody stick near the scene.
Non white leaders urged millions of Negro Indian and mixed blood South Africans to oppose Daniel F. Malan’s nationalist government. The united passive resistance movement announced a well disciplined non violent struggle against race laws to begin nationwide on June 26.
In Des Moines Iowa two rail workers attempted a daring midnight ride westward from Des Moines toward Madrid. They sabotaged a switch and caused trains to be held. both were dismissed with 90 day suspensions and one man, Kenneth J Muilenberg, lost his engineer post. Fireman Joe Mekus remained suspended pending further action.
The Berlin area faced renewed tension as the Soviet zone's police moved to seal off hamlets Buergerablage and Steinstuecken inside the Russian sector, forcing evacuations and raising fears of a broader blockade. East and West debates, protests, and military caution followed as Koje island holdouts and departures loomed in Korea and Germany.
Washington D C Secretary of Commerce Sawyer rejected a suggestion by the comptroller general to withhold 10 million dollars of the government payment on the U S United States luxury liner. Comptroller Lindsay Warren said the government payment of 45 million dollars on the 75 million dollar ship exceeded Congress intentions and amounted to a give away. The United States Line will pay about 30 million dollars of the cost. the ship is due June 21 and its maiden trans Atlantic voyage is July 3. Of the proposed payment, 19 million dollars is direct subsidy and 26 million are for defense features.

KOJE ISLAND Korea Saturday night patrols showed American and South Korean engineers pressing to complete new and smaller compounds for rebel prisoners. The first 4000-man enclosure with eight stockades for 500 prisoners each was about three days from topping out. Twenty compounds will hold Chinese and North Korean inmates. Tension on the island eased as inmates behind double and triple barbed wire fences remained unusually quiet, though nine prisoners died in two breaks Thursday and Friday.
The body of 22 month old Nathan Lorenz was found on a sandbar in the Wapsi river near the site where he fell earlier. Deputies said he drowned after going missing around 10 am during a holiday fishing trip with his parents Eugene and Mrs Lorenz and their two siblings.
In San Diego four U S destroyers of division 11 arrived from Korea on Saturday. Miss Norma Horwingtz of Los Angeles fell into the bay while greeting Radioman Freddie Smith of the USS Hammont. He leaped to save her and both were hoisted aboard.
