Costa Mesa faces a 23 million pothole problem with 51 percent budget cuts for patching and street repairs. City officials say backlog is huge, with funds lagging behind needs and old asphalt under soft clay. The mayor notes preventive maintenance cannot fix many streets.
The Costa Mesa Breeze reports Prop. 227 will force more than 100 bilingual New Port-Mesa teachers to relearn methods as English immersion becomes mandatory. Susan Markowitz, a 16 year ELD veteran at Whittier Elementary, says she was told to box up Spanish materials and stage them in her room as the measure limits bilingual instruction to one year before transition to standard classes.
Julie and Jason Three double's infant Logan, initially mis diagnosed with colds, is hospitalized with severe combined immunodeficiency. Doctors warn of life threatening infections and a bone marrow transplant is needed.
