Daugherty the Defender Not Entirely Disinterested
In Columbus the story centers on state funds and a bank deposit at 24 percent interest. State Treasurer McKinnon reportedly has $250,000 of public funds deposited, with his wife and deputy owning 150 shares in the bank. The deputy, Charles Steen, was a successor candidate. Daugherty defends the integrity of state money, claiming every dollar belongs to the treasury or is honestly accounted for, while noting past investigations lacked authority.

Political excess and bank ties in state treasurer line
The piece critiques McKinnon and Daugherty in a bank board context tied to state funds, questioning why low interest rates favored by the state contrasted with higher private returns. It argues that Daugherty acted as attorney for a bank director while probe records and political figures blur accountability, urging voters to oust the local “safe house machine” ahead of elections.
