Fight over temperance plank carried into morning session. Finlay's resolution defeated. The platform on which candidates will be carried to victory shapes the party's path as the convention progresses.
In Columbus on Aug 22 the dairy and food commissioner post went to P. J. Deigin of Erie on the second ballot. George Nyghslander of Darke county was acclaimed for the State Board of Public Works. Samuel A. Hoskins of Auglaize county was nominated on the first ballot for Secretary of State over Allen W. Thurman. Harper led for School Commissioner but voting paused as aisles were cleared. C. W. Haupert of Wayne won on the second ballot.
The second session opened at 9 30 Tuesday with B F McCann chosen as permanent chairman. Debate focused on whether the platform would include temperance, but the resolutions committee routed temperance advocates. A substitute for initiative and referendum was defeated after lengthy discussion.
Tuesday afternoon in Columbus delegates chosen for the state central committee and various senate committees. Contests centered on Hamilton county’s legitimacy with Lewis Bernard leading a minority faction in conflict with Cincinnati leaders. Charles Kilosh of Mercer chosen chairman. list of committee members from districts one through twenty reflects broad regional representation and ongoing party realignment.
At 7:30 Tuesday evening the convention is called to order in Memorial hall with Judge B. F. McCann delivering the keynote. Reports of committees follow. On Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. main business begins, including ticket nomination. Officers include temporary chairman B. F. McCann Dayton and temporary secretary Price Russell Creston.
Garber remains head of the executive committee into the next campaign. A resolutions committee is named with Thomas E. Powell as end appointed, including T. B. Powell Tom L. Johnson W. L. Finley J. McMahon D. A. Commager Fo OL Gorman and Janes 8. Thomas to draft the platform. Platform committee members listed for districts include Herbert Bigelat Hamilton in the first district and Frank M. Gorman Hamilton in the second.
The Democratic state central committee chair Frank Harper announced the state convention to adopt a memorial truth and establish temporary organization as recommended by the state committee. Judge 3 F McCann of Dayton served as temporary chairman at Columbus opening of the Ohio Democratic convention. He paid tribute to the late Governor Pattison, reviewed General Assembly work, and discussed tariffs while praising Bryan and criticizing Taft. The gathering framed the party’s path for the presidential nomination.
Sam Miller aged about 23 nearly died after a Tuesday night quarrel with Sanford Tubbs. In a drunken encounter at Chestnut Street’s Red Onion Catoon they fought when Miller struck back and Tubbs allegedly stabbed with a knife, eight inch gash near the heart. Tubbs claimed self defense and was released after Miller refused to prosecute. grand jury investigation possible.
County Auditor R. Randles is authorized to draw 484 dollars for December and June collections after a long delay. Deputy state auditor EB. M. Fitlington says the Attorney General advised following the Doan v Fisher case to settle with the county for five one per cent on school funds. The payment will be counted toward the August settlement.
A severe thunderstorm swept western Cosheelon county on Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock. It scorched a barn on Henry E F Babeoeh’s farm in Perry township, destroying hay and farming equipment valued at about $1,000. No injuries are reported.
Blissfield and neighboring school groups plan a Union picnic on Tuesday August 28 at Silver Lake near Akron. A committee led by Rev A L Smithson W H Mc Nell Elmer % Fox and W R Mc Nell arranged transport from Trinway via the Dresden branch of the C & O line with stops en route. Fare is 1.25 for round trip from towns to Warnawia and 1.00 from there to Kuumck. Visitors expect a pleasant day with a variety of attractions at the resort.
Carnegie Pa hall team to play four games with local aggregation this Saturday. Visiting squad regarded as one of Western Pennsylvania best amateurs, promising a strong battle. Charles Phillips of this city reports his father died at 7 45 this evening in Newcomerstown after a prolonged illness with a complication of diseases.
Three day old son of Bert Todd died this morning at 4 20. Funeral is planned for 3 p m this afternoon with Rev Kealer officiating. Body to be taken to Canad Lewisville for interment. BABY BOY. A son was born this morning to Mr and Mrs Sherman McNary of Ros cos.

A man named Ed Kennedy was found lying near the Panhandle tracks on North Firth between seven and eight Tuesday evening. He appeared intoxicated and at risk from approaching trains, and was placed under arrest by Neer Decker. TEACHERS EXAMINATION.
